Silence is a friend that takes us by the hand
and leads us slowly into the depths of our soul,
to the place where the world’s voice grows ever more distant,
and we are left alone with ourselves, with our hearts and our thoughts.
It makes us feel joy and pain
more intensely and sincerely,
for in silence, we cannot hide behind words,
we cannot pretend that everything is fine
when something inside us still aches.
Silence reveals all the secrets
that the mouth conceals behind closed lips;
it brings to light those feelings
we lacked the courage to voice,
those words we kept locked inside
out of fear, pain, or pride.
In silence, you realize how deeply you have loved,
how much you have forgiven,
how much you have endured,
and how many words remained suspended
between what you wanted to say
and what you chose not to say.
Silence teaches you to listen to the heart
when everyone else hears only the voice.
It teaches you to discern a hidden pain,
an unspoken longing,
a tear that never fell,
yet lingered long in the eyes of the soul.
But… sometimes
silence joins forces with pride,
and together they build a wall
that is difficult to tear down. A wall not built of stone,
but of unspoken words,
of “I won’t write first,”
of “let him reach out to me,”
of “I won’t tell him I miss him,”
of “I don’t want to look weak.”
And so, little by little,
two hearts that once spoke every day
begin to live on opposite sides of the same wall.
Both are thinking,
both are remembering,
both feel the absence,
yet neither takes the first step.
Pride says:
“Don’t speak.”
Silence answers:
“Wait.”
And time passes
while the heart waits for a word
that could change everything.
How strange the human heart is…
Sometimes an “I’m sorry”
can bring down an entire wall,
an “I miss you”
can open a closed door,
and an “Are you okay?”
can be the start of a reconciliation
that both have been silently awaiting.
But pride often convinces us
that speaking first means losing,
when in reality,
sometimes speaking first
means saving something
that still holds value for you.
Because not every silence is peace.
Some silences are pain.
Some are longing.
Some are regret. Some words are waiting to be spoken
before it is too late.
And behind every long silence,
an entire story may lie hidden:
a love that didn’t end,
a friendship that grew weary,
a heart that was hurt,
someone who waited,
and another who didn’t know how to return.
Sometimes we think
that by staying silent we protect ourselves,
but we forget that silence
can also hurt the person
standing before us.
We think we are guarding our pride,
but we might lose a person.
We think we are waiting for the right moment,
but time does not always wait for us.
So, when your heart tells you to speak,
do not let pride seal your lips.
If you have something to say, say it.
If you miss someone, do not always hide it.
If you have made a mistake, apologize.
If you still care, do not pretend you don’t.
Because life is too short
to build walls
between people who were once home to one another.
Silence can be a friend
when it takes us by the hand
and leads us into the depths of our soul.
But when it joins forces with pride,
it becomes a wall. And sometimes
it isn’t a lack of love
that drives us apart…
It is a word left unspoken,
a step never taken,
an “I’m sorry” held back in the heart,
an “I miss you” that stopped at the lips,
and a pride
that kept us from knocking
on the door of the other’s heart.
**Because the highest walls
are not built of stone…
they are built of silence.
And the hardest walls to tear down
are those built
by two people who still feel,
but whom pride convinces
to pretend they feel nothing anymore.**
